Genoa CFC, as a founding member of the Club of Pioneers, collaborated in the establishment of the Pioneers Cup. This competition is still known today, on the international level, as the most important event between the clubs which founded the game of football in their respective countries.
The Pioneers Cup was first held on 16 November 2013 in Sheffield on the legendary lawn of the Coach & Horses Ground, home stadium of Sheffield FC. The Spaniards of the Recreativo Huelva, the longest-running club in the Spanish football scene, took part in the first official event together with the hosts and the Genoa CFC.
A peculiar feature of the tournament was that it mixed groups of fans and old glories of each football club company.
The Griffin deployed Skuhravy, Onofri, Briaschi, Braglia (in goal goalkeeper for the match of the historic success at Anfield of Bagnoli’s team against Liverpool in the UEFA ’91 -’92 season) and Ruotolo.
The tournament was won by Sheffield FC.
The second edition of the tournament took place in Huelva on 6 September 2014 and involved the host team of Recreativo, El Decano, the oldest club in Spain, the Dutch of the Haarlem (Koninklijke Royal Haarlemsche Football Club) and, indeed, the Griffin.
Braglia, Ruotolo and Skuhravy were, like saying, three protagonists for Genoa in Bagnoli’s fourth place, with Claudio Onofri as coach on the bench to finish up the luxury additions for the rossoblù.
Besides there were, among them, many footballer-supporters of the team (Team Fubles) recently victorious in the mini-tournament between genoani fans who had already received the first applause under the Gradinata Nord on the occasion of the Genoa-Naples pre-game .
Genoa was edged out by Recreativo in the final only by the rules of goal difference after the score between the two clubs had closed in a tie (1-1).
